GROWING GREEN
The growing green mobile greenhouse was an excellent opportunity to enhance the existing idea of food production. The Center for urban ecology at Butler University funds a small urban farm pilot program for a more extensive system of farming that, in the future, could supplement fruits and vegetables for the College of Butler food distribution system on campus. The Center for Urban Ecology farm (CUE Farm) was limited to crop size and seeding preparation due to ill-efficient facilities. The next logical step in Cue Farm's evolution was to look for such a facility that could meet their needs. Ball State University and its reputation for an exceptional architecture program were given the opportunity to take on this endeavor, and so Growing Green hit the ground running.
Ventilation
Passive ventilation was designed using two large windows on the south facade and four smaller windows on the north facade to create a stacked effect. The windows were controlled using a gas piston which automatically opened based upon internal temperature and humidity levels. Smaller electric fans were used to circulated airflow and micronutrients.
Irrigation
The irrigation system utilizes a digital control box which allows the user ultimate flexibility. The irrigation system was divided into multiple zones for different crops and is set to a timer so the client does not need to be present to watering. Additionally each water nozzle allows for multiple water setting from mist - soak.
